Call To Worship:

Galatians 5:22-26

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.

Songs:

King of Love

Verse 1

The King of Love my Shepherd is

Whose goodness faileth never

I nothing lack if I am His

And He is mine forever

And He is mine forever

Verse 2

Where streams of living water flow

My ransomed soul He leadeth

And where the verdant pastures grow

With food celestial feedeth

Never failing Ruler of my heart

Everlasting Lover of my soul

On the mountain high or in the valley low

The King of Love my Shepherd is

The King of Love my Shepherd is

Verse 3

Lost and foolish off I strayed

But yet in love He sought me

And on His shoulder gently laid

And home rejoicing brought me

Verse 4

In death's dark veil I fear no ill

With Thee dear Lord beside me

Thy rod and staff my comfort still

Thy cross before to guide me

Teaching: Fruit of the Spirit: Love

Galatians 5:22-26

22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.

John 3:16

“For God so LOVED the world, that he gave his one and only son.”

1 John 4:8

“Whoever does not love does not know God, for God IS love.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

“Love is patient, Love is Kind. Love does not envy. Or boast. It is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist in its own way. It is not irritable or resentful. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

John 13:34-35

“A new Commandment I give you…Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

1 Peter 4:8

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.”

1 Corinthians 13:13

“Now these three remain, faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Matthew 22:37-40

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Proverbs 10:12:

"Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs."

Exodus 34:6-7

“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

Psalm 103

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits—
who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy (Hesed), who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Hesed). He will not always accuse, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love (Hesed) toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him. For he knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust. As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love (Hesed) of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, obedient to his spoken word. 21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers who do his will. 22 Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

Communion:

  • Head up to the front to take communion.

  • Once you take communion head back to your seat and reflect on the following questions:

    • What does “the activity of faithful, committed, costly love” look like in your life?

    • How can you, your family, our church, live more fully into God’s Hesed love?

Benediction:

Move among us, Spirit,
and gather us together with you.
Take our many selves—
our lives, our loves, our ideas,
our questions, our speech, our silence—
and unite us as your people.
Give us the gifts of presence, transformation and guidance,
so that even as we dream your dreams and see your visions,
we may be able to witness to your presence
in our common life.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.—(2 Corinthians 13:14)

Amen.
