Call To Worship:
John 3:8
8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Songs:
Be Thou My Vision
Verse 1
Be Thou my Vision O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light
Verse 2
Be Thou my Wisdom and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Verse 3
High King of heaven my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys bright heaven's Sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my Vision O Ruler of all
Beautiful Scandalous Night
Go on up to the mountain of mercy
To the crimson perpetual tide
Go under and be purified
Follow Christ to the Holy Mountain
Sinner, sorry and wrecked by the fall
Cleanse your heart and your soul
in the fountain that flows
for you and for me and for all
Chorus
At the wonderful tragic mysterious tree
On that beautiful scandalous night you and me
Were atoned by his blood and forever washed white
On that beautiful scandalous night
On the hillside you will be delivered
At the foot of the cross justified
And your spirit restored, by the rive that pours
From the Blessed Saviors side
Abide
Verse 1
For my waking breath
For my daily bread
I depend on you
I depend on you
For the sun to rise
For my sleep at night
I depend on you
I depend on you
Chorus
You’re the way the truth and the life
You’re the well that never runs dry
I’m the branch and you are the vine
Draw me close and teach me to abide.
Verse 2
Where the Spirit leads
As I’m following
I depend on you
I depend on you
For the victories
Still in front of me
I depend on you
I depend on you
Chorus
You’re the way the truth and the life
You’re the well that never runs dry
I’m the branch and You are the vine
Draw me close and teach me to abide
Be my strength, my song in the night
Be me all my treasure my prize
I am yours, forever you’re mine
Draw me close and teach me to abide.
Verse 3
When I pass through death
As I enter rest
I depend on you
I depend on you
For eternal life
To be raised with Christ
I depend on you
I depend on you
Teaching: Holy Spirit: From the OT to the NT
Where have we been so far in this series?:
Spirit breaths life into all things.
Spirit shows up in Egypt to free God’s people from slavery
Spirit dwells within the Tabernacle in the center of the Israelite camp as they navigate their way through the wilderness to the land of promise.
The spirit showed up to impart people with divine creativity and artistry.
Spirit helps design and craft the Tabernacle.
Spirit shows up to infuse people with divine leadership, helping Moses carry the weight that was too heavy for him to carry alone.
Spirit comes on people we don’t expect like Balaam. Or his Donkey.
We looked at the Implicit work of the Spirit vs. the Explicit work of the Spirit in the story of Samuel where the Spirit is not “explicitly” mentioned but we know the Spirit was there.
The Spirit was in the judges. Coming on people like Deborah to lead God’s people. Or Samson to give him strength…and humility. Even though he didn’t use the Spirit in that way.
Spirit comes on the Kings of Israel, holding them to a standard and expectation to care for the vulnerable, lead people to pursue the heart of God, and to act justly towards all people. Or entering into the hearts of humanity to give us a heart of flesh.
The Spirit prophesied about through Joel that the spirit would be poured out on all people, creating equality, inclusion, and unity, and a new community.
And then finally, we have looked at the Spirit’s work to build peace and justice in the very foundation of the world through God’s new Kingdom.
Communion:
Head up to the front to take communion.
Once you take communion head back to your seat and reflect on the following questions:
How do you remain grounded your relationship with Jesus?
How does love and safety help you navigate the unknowns or cognitive dissonance in the world?
Benediction:
Move among us, Spirit,
and gather us together with you.
Take our many selves—
our lives, our loves, our ideas,
our questions, our speech, our silence—
and unite us as your people.
Give us the gifts of presence, transformation and guidance,
so that even as we dream your dreams and see your visions,
we may be able to witness to your presence
in our common life.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.—(2 Corinthians 13:14)
Amen.
