28 Days of Prayer & Fasting:

February 1 we begin 28 Days of Prayer & Fasting together.

Call To Worship

Matthew 6:9-15

“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Prayer #1: “Humility like children.”

In week 1 of the “Way of Jesus” series we talked about the humility needed in coming to Jesus. It’s the willingness to admit that we don’t have it all together and we need Jesus. But it we also talked a lot about the need to live into the humility of life and our schedules like Jesus did. Where the disruptions that he experienced were met with the posture of humility not aggression.

  • take the next 5-8 minutes and in little groups or with your family answer the next few questions and end in prayer.

  • What has been challenging about humility? How have I been meeting disruptions in life with either humility or aggression?

  • What situations are the hardest to show humility?

  • Pray together over these things.

Prayer #2 & Communion: “Compassion of the cross”

In week 2 we discussed that Jesus’ story of coming to humanity, to live and die to raise us up, is the ultimate form of compassion. Seeing the suffering of others and stepping into that suffering to help bring an end to it. We also discussed how indifference and legalism tend to be the roadblocks to become compassionate people.

  • Go take a thing of communion and take communion in a small group.

  • How have you tried to see people more intentionally this past week? What did you see?

  • What does it look like to step into the suffering of others?

  • Pray for the things in the world that are troubling or concerning right now.

    • russia/ukraine

    • COVID

    • Political turmoil in our nation

Teaching: “The Way of Jesus: Forgiveness”

  • Do you find it easy or challenging to forgive?

Luke 17:3-4,

“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Prayer #3: Forgiveness can be Hard”

  • Can you think of a moment of forgiveness that was impactful for you? Either where you forgave someone or they forgave you?

  • You don’t need to name people, but if there are people that you are struggling to forgive for something, spend a moment in prayer over that situation.

    • What needs to happen next?

Benediction:

May you follow in the footsteps of Jesus,

May you be the hands of him who touched the sick,

The feet of him who walked among the lowly,

The arms of him who embraced the despised,

And the mouth of him who proclaimed liberty for all.

The Lord bless you and keep you;

the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

the Lord lift up his face upon you and give you peace.

—Numbers 6:24–26
