Call To Worship

Matthew 20:26th 29-34,

As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.”

Worship:

“Son of David”

The blind won't gain their sight,
By opening their eyes...
A king is coming to His city and crowds surround, are following,
If I could see, I would follow too

He heals the sick with His hands, as He walks by, they reach for Him;
If I could see, I would reach out too The blind won't gain their sight by opening their eyes

Son of David have mercy on me! Son of David I want to see!
Son of David have mercy!
I can not leave this gate since I can not see my way, but I can stand and call His name

No I could never leave this gate but I will stand and shout His name, and I will count on His grace!
Son of David have mercy on me! Son of David I want to see! Son of David have mercy!

I was blind - now I see! Jesus saved me!

“Mercy”- Chris Renzema

The rejects, the dropouts
Those used to being passed by
The addicts, the burned out
Who've lost their way so many times
There's room at His table for you
There's room at His table for you

'Cause His mercy's new with the morning
Even when you sleep through the day
And if you're too drunk to notice
He'll hold your hand 'til you wake

The stressed out, the worried
Those terrified of right now
The wandering, the hurried
Who don't know how to slow down
There's room at His table for you
There's room at His table for you

'Cause His mercy's new with the morning
Even when you can't sleep at night
And if you're too anxious to notice
He'll hold your hand while you cry

And through the tears we'll sing
Hallelujah, how can it be?
You're not too tired to keep holding on to me
Hallelujah, how can it be?
You're not too tired to keep holding on to me

Teaching: “The Way of Jesus: Compassion”

  • When was a moment that you received the compassion of someone else? What happened? How did you feel?

  • When you think of a compassionate person who comes to mind?

Matthew 5:7, “blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

Exodus 34:6-7 “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Proverbs 31:8-9 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." — ,

John 3:18, "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."

Zechariah 7:9-10, "This is what the Lord Almighty said: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.'" —

Isaiah 58, “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”

Philippians 2:5-8, “your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.”

Luke 18:9-14, “To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Communion:

  • How do we live more compassionately?

  • Why does it seem hard to be compassionate?

Corporate Prayer:

  • what are we concerned about in our world that we need to pray over?

    • Russia & the Ukraine

    • Voting Rights Bill

    • Omicron

    • what else?

Benediction:

May you follow in the footsteps of Jesus,

May you be the hands of him who touched the sick,

The feet of him who walked among the lowly,

The arms of him who embraced the despised,

And the mouth of him who proclaimed liberty for all.

The Lord bless you and keep you;

the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

the Lord lift up his face upon you and give you peace.
