Call To Worship:

Philippians 4: 4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness by evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Songs:

Hear The Sound

God of mercy
Full of grace
You are forever
Always forever

Slow to anger
Rich in love
You are forever
Always forever
We hear Your kingdom shout
And all Your praises reign, come on

So let the heavens roar
Echo across the ground
And as your people sing of Your majesty
Lord hear the sound
Lord hear the sound

God of mercy
Full of grace
You are forever
Always forever

Slow to anger
Rich in love
You are forever
Always forever
We hear Your kingdom shout
And all Your praises reign

So let the heavens roar
Echo across the ground
And as your people sing of Your majesty
Lord hear the sound

So let the heavens roar
Echo across the ground
And as your people sing of Your majesty
Lord hear the sound
Lord hear the sound

Everyone, everyone
Everyone
Everyone, everyone
You forgive, You forgive
Everyone
You restore, You restore
Everyone
You redeem, You redeem
Everyone

King of My Heart

Let the King of my heart
Be the mountain where I run
The fountain I drink from
Oh, He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the shadow where I hide
The ransom for my life
Oh, He is my song

'Cause You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh

And let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails
The anchor in the waves
Oh oh, He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins
The echo of my days
Oh oh, He is my song

Let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails
The anchor in the waves
Oh oh, He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins
The echo of my days
Oh, He is my song

'Cause You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh
You are good
You are good, oh oh

You're never gonna let
You're never gonna let me down
And You're never gonna let
You're never gonna let me down
You're never gonna let
You're never gonna let me down
You're never gonna let
You're never gonna let me down

When the night is holding onto me

God is holding on

When the night is holding onto me

God is holding on

Sing Over Me

When I am lost inside my mind
Sing me the hope I cannot find

When my despair has left me blind
Sing me the tune I’ve left behind

[Chorus]
Will you sing over me?
Will you sing over me?
Sing of the goodness I cannot see
Will you sing over me?

Verse 2
When all the grief   my hands
When I’ve forgotten who I am

I can’t feel anything but shame
Sing out   me back my name

[Chorus]
Will you sing over me?
Will you sing over me?
Sing of the goodness I cannot see
Will you sing over me?
Will you sing over me?

Teaching: Fruit of the Spirit: Peace

John 16:33

I say these things so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world.

Romans 5:1 & 11

5 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us... 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

Peace is not:

Peace IS:

Ephesians 2:18 "...He himself is our peace." (Referring to Jesus)

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

What do we learn about Jesus's peace from this story?

Matthew 14:14-21

14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Obstacles to Peace and their Corresponding Truths and Practices

  • Fear

    • Truths:

      • Romans 8:28

        • "He works all things for the good of those who love Him."

      • Jesus is always with us

        •  Peter says, “Where else would we go? You have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68

      • Maintain eternal perspective.

  • Control

    • Practice:

      • Monitor your use of the word, "should".

      • Acceptance

      • Lament

  • Sin

    • Practice

      • Confession and repair

      • Awareness of Spirit's leading

Communion:

  • Head up to the front to take communion.

  • Once you take communion head back to your seat and reflect on the following questions:

    • Which obstacle of peace do you resonate most with?

    • What do you feel called to practice in order to rest in God’s peace (out of the practices listed in the sermon- or others!)?

Benediction:

Move among us, Spirit,
and gather us together with you.
Take our many selves—
our lives, our loves, our ideas,
our questions, our speech, our silence—
and unite us as your people.
Give us the gifts of presence, transformation and guidance,
so that even as we dream your dreams and see your visions,
we may be able to witness to your presence
in our common life.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.—(2 Corinthians 13:14)

Amen.
