“Our Father in heaven, may your name be revered as holy. May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”

Teaching: “Seeking God’s Kingdom First: The Not Yet Kingdom”

New Theme “Seeking God’s Kingdom First”

Big & ambitious theme 

  1. Kings, Kingdoms, Rule & Reign of God is a theme all over scripture

    1. “Christ” means Messiah or Anointed One

      1. Anointed as what? King!

  2. Defining Kingdom of God

    1. Eliminate what it is not

      1. Heaven

      2. Political party

      3. Countries like the United Kingdom

      4. Simply an Internal Reality of God within individuals

      5. Church

    2. Kingdom reaches into all of the above but none of them alone is the definition of the Kingdom of God alone.

    3. My understanding of Kingdom (at least at this point in my life): Both a Spiritual and physical reality where the people of God are living the way of Jesus that shapes and changes everything in its path. 

  3. 4 Tangible characteristics of any kingdom

    1. There is a King

    2. There is a People

    3. There is Land

    4. There is a Law

  4. The “Already/Not Yet” Kingdom of God

    1. The kingdom is both “already” here right now in our midst but is also something that has “not yet” come to its full reality. 

    2. Lots of things in life are both “already but Not Yet”

      1. New Year’s Resolutions

      2. Mission Statements

      3. Relationships

  5. Matthew 6:9-13

    1. “Our Father in heaven, may your name be revered as holy. May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”

    2. Any mission or vision statement is referring to a future desired reality. 

    3. Missio’s Mission is to Love God, Love People, and Awaken A Movement of Jesus. 

      1. Have we fully accomplished this mission today? 

    4. Jesus tells his disciples to pray for a desired future where God’s Kingdom will reign on earth as it is in Heaven. 

      1. But just because that vision is in the “not yet” future does not mean there is no way for us to experience the Kingdom of God today, in Seattle. 

    5. 3 things we pray for as a part of the Kingdom now, today

      1. Daily provision from God

      2. Forgiveness and Reconciliation

      3. Faithfulness to keep God as King of our lives

    6. Praying these will lead us to the “not yet” future reality of the kingdom. 

  6. What is the “Not Yet” Future Kingdom of God?

    1. Revelation 21:3-7: “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and be their God; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.”

    2. “I am making all things NEW”

      1. Better than it was before: a New and Better Condition

      2. In the Kingdom now, the “Already” kingdom, we have to pray for provision, forgiveness, and faithfulness 

      3. But in the “Not Yet Kingdom” there will be no need for those prayers because the fullness of the kingdom of God will have been accomplished. 

  7. We get glimpses of this “Not Yet” kingdom in the ways of Jesus being lived out in the Kingdom now, today. 

  8. Next week we will dig a little more into the “Already” kingdom happening right now.
