Teaching: What if Jesus was Serious Abt Prayer: Jesus’ Method

1- Lectio Divina:

Read Psalm 121. The goal is not to rush through the reading but to engage it reflectively and with an awareness of God’s presence.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.”
Read it once more. Identify a word or phrase that speaks to you.
If you are comfortable share the word or phrase with your group.
Read the passage one final time as a prayer to God.

2- Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice

Read Luke 22:14-23 together
- 14 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. 15 He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves, 18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. 22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!” 23 Then they began to ask one another which one of them it could be who would do this.
When you think back on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, what most surprises you?
- What other emotions or thoughts does this bring up in you?
Head up to the table to take communion together.

3- Prayer of Examen

When in the past week did you feel closest to presence of God?
What was the most life-giving part of your week?
What events, relationships, or thoughts of the day draw you close to God?
