1 John
John was the author of 1 John. Same John who wrote the Gospel of John. He wrote the letter to the “believers” assuming that multiple locations and churches would be reading the letter and then passing it on to the next place and people.
Gnosticism was a growing problem in the first century that turned into a full blown issue in the 2nd and 3rd Century. Gnosticism’s basic premise was that the physical world was evil, i.e. our physical bodies were completely evil, and only the spiritual realm was good. Therefore, the goal of this life is to get, as quickly as possible, to the spiritual. To dismantle the evil physical bodies for the good spiritual ones. They believed that to achieve this shedding of the evil physical realm was done through the attaining of “special knowledge” that was outside the work and knowledge of Jesus. Galatians directly addresses this desire for special knowledge by saying that Jesus IS the ultimate knowledge of salvation and redemption. John addresses more directly the notion that the physical world was evil by drawing attention to the fact that Jesus himself came in the flesh. And we are then to walk as Jesus did.
Love is the ultimate goal of 1 John. Love that binds, protects, serves, heals, and so much more.
