Call To Worship:

Psalm 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;  my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The moon and the stars
Declare who You are

Teaching: Welcome Back Sunday

1 Kings 19

3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Luke 10:17-21

17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

Commission For Students:

Allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with wisdom as you pursue your studies. Devote yourselves to those studies and draw ever closer to God, who is the source of all knowledge. Be gracious and patient with yourselves and others. And remember to invest in the power of relationship with others. With friends, family, and with Jesus and his church. Learn, grow, and discover new adventures and dream of a world better because of what you bring to it. In all, remain faithful in all you do. Faithful to friends. Faithful to yourselves. Faith to Jesus and his Kingdom.

Commission For Missio:

As you allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with wisdom….devote yourselves to the lifting up of the body of Christ. Pursue connection and care for these students. In moments of their exhaustion, give them a meal. In moments of their joy, be joyful and celebrate with them...and give them a meal. In all things find space to give bits of the wisdom of your years so they can continue to develop and grow as people of faith flourishing in this life with Jesus…and give them a meal. Be present, reach out. And pray always for them by name…as you give them a meal!

Communion:

  • Head up to the front to take communion.

  • Return to your seat and reflect on the following questions:

    • How will you encourage students this year?

    • How will you remain faithful to Jesus this year while at school?

Benediction:

Move among us, Spirit,
and gather us together with you.
Take our many selves—
our lives, our loves, our ideas,
our questions, our speech, our silence—
and unite us as your people.
Give us the gifts of presence, transformation and guidance,
so that even as we dream your dreams and see your visions,
we may be able to witness to your presence
in our common life.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.—(2 Corinthians 13:14)

Amen.
